A fugue is a derived polyphonic piece of music in which one or more themes are seen consecutively in all the voices belonging to the contrapuntal structure.
Fugues differ vastly in their actual form. The main subject is repeated in a series at varying pitch levels. The fugue saw gradual emergence from the imitative polyphony of the thirteenth century.
Famous fugues include Johann Sebastian Bach’s keyboard fugues, as well as those composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven and others who included fugues in symphonies and string quartets, mainly in the final movements.
